Celebrity chef Maggie Beer shares health update and harrowing details of her recovery after horror fall at home: ‘I learned what it was to be fed on a tube’
Maggie Beer has shared an emotional health update four months after she was rushed to hospital following a horror fall at her Barossa Valley home.
The celebrity chef, 79, revealed harrowing details about her long and slow recovery during a chat with The Australian.
Beer said she had to be patient because her process of returning to her old self was a long one.
“When I first came home, I was up for an hour and went back to bed for another hour,” she said.
‘Yesterday I was awake all day without resting – that’s a huge step forward.’
However, Beer explained that she struggled to regain her appetite after the injury and her time in the hospital.

“I learned what it was like to be fed through a tube and then desperately want to make the transition to real food but not want to eat anything,” she said.
“I learned that without the smell of food and the visual excitement of small plates, nothing could bring back my appetite.”
She also paid tribute to her husband, Colin, who stood by her side during the difficult process.
“He says he knows I’m doing better because I want to get involved now,” she said.
In October, Maggie posted a video to Instagram revealing that she was slowly recovering and hoped to get back to normal soon.
“The support I’ve had from the entire community, across Australia, and from friends and family, I’m so grateful and overwhelmed,” Maggie began.
“I’ve come such a long way, but I underestimated the severity of the injuries, so even though I want to tell you how good I feel now, I still have a way to go.”
Maggie then thanked her fans and said their continued support and well wishes helped them through this difficult time.

Many of Maggie’s famous friends quickly took to the comments section to wish her a speedy recovery.
“We love you Maggie,” celebrity trainer Michelle Bridges wrote and MasterChef Australia veteran Gary Mehigan added: “Take care, we’re all thinking of you.”
In August, Maggie was then rushed to hospital a fall at her home in South Australia left her with broken bones and bruises.
A family member took to Instagram to update fans on the esteemed chef’s progress.
The loved one assured her followers that the food writer and restaurateur was in the best possible medical hands and will likely make a full recovery.
No timetable has been given for Maggie’s recovery as family members explain this will be based on daily advice from her doctors.
Maggie is a celebrity chef, author and restaurateur who was awarded the Order of Australia in 2012 for her contributions to the food and tourism industries.
She is best known for being one of the judges on The Great Australian Bake Off alongside Matt Moran until she left in 2022.
Maggie also co-hosted the ABC television cooking show The Cook and The Chef with Simon Bryant and made guest appearances on MasterChef Australia.
