A border patrol officer died after running back to his family’s burning home to save his six-year-old daughter.

Jacqueline Montanaro and her daughter Madelyn died in a house fire after their family was awakened by fire alarms and a fire broke out on the first floor of their New Jersey home.

The mother of two was sleeping with her husband William when alarms went off and they rushed to find Madelyn, her eight-year-old daughter Elena and the Goldendoodle family.

William, Elena, and Jaqueline managed to get out before noticing that the six-year-old was missing.

“As I ran back into the house for Madelyn, I was engulfed in an enormous amount of hot, thick black smoke,” William said in a statement released by his brother to nj.com. “Without hesitation, Jackie struck out with the love of a mother and the courage of a police officer to further her quest to save our daughter.”

William, 39, was unable to get through the house to save Madelyn. Meanwhile, Jaqueline disappeared and never came out again.

“They basically had 10 seconds to try to get out of the house before they got covered,” Willams’ brother told the news outlet. They did what they could.

Heartbroken, William recalled his wife and daughter about whom he actively posted on social media.

‘I’m heartbroken. I have lost the love of my life, my beautiful wife, Jackie, and my sweet, loving and brave little girl, Madelyn,” said Mr. Montanaro. Jackie was a hero.

Firefighters removed Jacqueline and Madelyn from the home and took them to a local hospital in critical condition where they were pronounced dead.

The cause of the fire has not been revealed, and the family Goldendoodle is still missing.

William added that he enlisted the Hound Hunters search party to find the dog.

“The search for our beloved dog continues, Duchess,” William said on Sunday. “Thank you to our neighbors and to the dozens of people, the Hazlet Police Department and law enforcement in the surrounding communities who have been and continue to push to find her.”
