A runner has tearfully lashed out at “selfish and irresponsible” dog owners after being chased by a golden retriever.

April, who lives on a farm in Queensland, burst into tears while sitting in her car after she and her cattle dog Winnie were chased by the larger dog while she was jogging.

She begged dog owners to ‘please put your dog on a leash’ after being forced to desperately protect Winnie from the golden retriever – whose owner was nowhere to be seen.

“Oh f***, I think I’m just overwhelmed because I just finished the longest run I’ve ever done and I felt Winne pulling and I look behind me and there’s a big golden retriever,” she said.

β€œ(It’s) chasing her and Winnie is terrified, tail drawn in, and runs into me.”

April said she became exhausted and fell into a bin while trying to fend off the unleashed animal.

‘I tried to back her up and bump into a box, but that scared Winnie even more and this dog is still coming straight at us.

“The owner was nowhere to be seen… it’s so frustrating.”

She managed to flee from the dog and get Winnie safely into her car.

‘Why do you let your dog loose on residential streets to chase people down a path where you are nowhere to be seen? Why? What is the point?

“You’re putting your dog in a dangerous situation.”

April also posted a message in the video description to people who don’t leash their dogs.

‘You might think that because your dog is friendly, it is completely harmless to let your dog loose, uncontrolled and running freely to whomever he wants.

‘It’s not harmless. Our leash laws exist for a reason.

β€œWhat about the dog owners who have invested thousands of hours/dollars into training their dogs, only to have it ruined by your selfish and irresponsible actions?”

But viewers noticed a contradiction in some of the young woman’s other popular TikTok videos.

In at least two clips, she has let her dog run loose in public.

One time she was on the beach in June, and the other time on the street in August, although her dog seems well trained and under control.

April in particular received support from empathetic dog owners.

β€œIt’s so scary, you did a great job. So thankful nothing bad happened, it’s never easy.

“You did the right things.”

But some were confused.

“A golden retriever?” someone asked.

β€œ(They) are so friendly they just wanted to play,” said another.

“A little confused, so he tried to attack your dog or did he just run with you because you kept running?”

Another, however, nailed her most important message: “Never let your dog loose unless you can 100 percent trust him to recall.”
