‘He’s a quirky, funny filmmaker, yet there’s a seductive universality to the stories he wants to tell. He is simply one of Australia’s greats.’
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cate was asked what attracted her to the project and how Sister Eileen brought her in as a character.
She said, “Well, it’s usually conversation that gets things going for me. As an actor, whether on stage or screen, I’m very much a director. And what I mean by that is that the work comes out of those early conversations…
“When you’re dealing with someone like Warwick who writes, directs and does all the cinematography of his movies, the script is just kind of a template for the idea, right?…
“Warwick is someone I’ve admired for a while, so we just started talking during the pandemic and the character was pretty much secondary to the conversations…
‘We were exploring themes together and the desire to work together grew.
“Warwick had been brewing this world for a long time, and the archetypes, the internal struggles, and the framework were all there when he took the script out of his sock drawer and showed it to me.
“But once I came across this thing, it meant that the original character of the priest would be changed to a nun, which had interesting consequences.”
