A beloved cat owned by an OAP could soon be crowned the world’s oldest cat as she approaches her 32nd birthday.

Rosie, a fluffy tortoiseshell, will reach the milestone on June 1 with proud owner Lila Brissett, 72, of Norwich, Norfolk, who took her in as a kitten in 1991.

Lila is now being encouraged to contact Guinness Book of Records officials to confirm that Rosie is the world’s oldest moggy.

Rosie, who is 144 in human years, has only visited the vet twice and has no intention of giving up the quiet life she shares with Lila.

The current record holder is a juvenile 27-year-old cat named Flossie from Kent.

Rosie is now looking forward to her 32nd birthday when, as always, she receives a birthday party and cards from her loving neighbors.

Retired housewife Lila said, “This beautiful thing was handed to me as a kitten in a wicker basket in 1991 and the rest is history.

“She’s only been to the vet twice in her life. Spayed once in the 90’s and five years ago to get antibiotics for a cyst on her head. She’s quite a character. She still has all her teeth.’

Lila was approached in the 1990s by a cat rescue woman with Rosie as a kitten, who needed rehoming after her first household realized their daughter was allergic.

Widowed Lila had previously rescued an abused cat and stray dog and was so happy to welcome Rosie into her home.

Rosie is a cross between a ginger tomcat and a ragdoll, which gives her a wonderfully fluffy tail.

She lives permanently with Lila in her ground-floor apartment and gets Purina One cat food daily “or she’ll make a mess.”

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, which lists world records of both human achievement and the extremes of the natural world, the oldest living cat currently on record is 27.

Flossie, was born on December 29, 1995, as verified in Orpington, UK, on November 10, 2022.

It added that the oldest cat ever is Creme Puff of Austin, Texas, who was born on August 3, 1967 and lived until August 6, 2005 – 38 years and 3 days.

When asked why she thought Rosie had gotten so old, Lila said, “Tell me! Care and attention? Good food? Don’t know. All my animals seem to be reaching a good age.

Rosie sleeps by the window all day and like clockwork she gets some food and uses the litter box.

An alarm clock is not necessary. All she does is eat, sleep, use the litter box and repeat.

“I often have to check to see if she’s alive and breathing. I worry about the day she crosses the rainbow bridge. She will leave a big void.

“I’ll miss her when she goes. But I’ll never put her to sleep.”

A Guinness Book of World Records spokesperson said: “We would encourage Lila to submit an application for Rosie through the Guinness World Records website for our Records Management Team to review.”
