Man and woman feared dead in Carwal Creek Bridge crash after car veers into a creek
An emergency rescue operation is underway to save two people who are feared dead after their car crashed into a creek.
The SUV crashed at around 1.15am on Sunday near Carwal Creek Bridge, south of Mungindi, near the New South Wales-Queensland border.
Friends driving another car noticed the SUV was no longer following them and returned to check out the scene of the accident.
They were joined by a local homeowner and helped a woman, believed to be in her 20s, out of the car.
Emergency services airlifted her to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Two other passengers, believed to be a man and a woman, could not be rescued.
New South Wales police fear they both died after the vehicle quickly became submerged.
Police divers and accident investigators traveled to the scene to support local police, ambulances and fire departments.
