CAROLINE GRAHAM meets Trump true believers in Milwaukee: ‘He’s our own very American messiah – and his victory is now pre-ordained’

For Fanchon Blythe, 63, a Nebraska Rep. and mother of four, seeing Donald Trump in the flesh was evidence of divine intervention.

“The hand of God came down and protected him from that bullet. I believe he was saved for a reason,” she said as tears rolled down her cheeks.

“When that bullet hit his ear, his first reaction was to stand up and fight. I believe God sent him to save our country and fight for the future of my children and grandchildren.”

There is no doubt that Trump’s loyal supporters now regard him as a deity.

At the Republican Party convention in Milwaukee last week, $75 Trump Bibles were sold, along with T-shirts featuring the now-iconic image of Trump raising his fist, bloodied face, and the American flag behind him.

Ms. Blythe, who serves on the party’s powerful national committee, believes it is the fusion of faith and politics that will bring Trump back to the White House.

She said: ‘There have been lies and lies told about Trump, but he has united Republicans like never before. We are tired of illegal immigrants crossing our borders, tired of inflation, tired of wokeness in schools, tired of the left trying to tell us what a woman is.’

Many noted that Trump’s demeanor initially changed after the assassination attempt.

Nevada attorney Jennifer McGrath, who attended the event with her mother Millicent, 89, said: “You can’t help but change when someone tries to take your life. By the time he gave his acceptance speech, he was back to the man we know – but there was a deeper understanding.

“He’s changed on a spiritual level. He’s more thoughtful, more willing to represent not just Republican Americans, but all Americans.” Donald Trump Jr. told me, “My father took a bullet, and I’ve never been prouder of him. He united the country. I believe in God’s plan.”

Singer Lee Greenwood’s song God Bless The USA has become Trump’s anthem. He has no doubt that his victory is predestined. ‘This is a man fulfilling his destiny. His first instinct when he got shot was to stand up, show he was OK and shout, ‘Fight! Fight! Fight!’

“No one is going to interfere in America with such a man at the helm, who has asserted himself in the face of evil.”

Nancy Burton, a delegate from Atlanta, Georgia, who wore a dress with Trump’s image on it, said: “People call him a messiah, but he’s a true American. He’s got swagger. He’s got character. He’s the literal savior of our country.”

Although the religious fervor at the convention sometimes turned into a circus (the delegate, who owns a Labrador named Lambeau, said an average of 250 photos were taken per day), I have no doubt that, barring something going wrong, Trump will win the presidential election in November.

Polls show him ahead of ailing President Joe Biden in most key swing states, including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Arizona.

P Rae Easley, a financier who leads a group of black supporters in Chicago, said: ‘Trump took action to make things better last time and we believe he will do so if he runs again. This time, blacks overwhelmingly support him.’

Martha Fierro, a nurse who was born in Mexico but came to the U.S. at age 7 and is now running for the Texas Senate, said: “The Democrats have turned the American dream into the American nightmare. We have to take back our country. Trump is the only one who can do that.”

As thousands of red, white and blue party balloons were released on Thursday night and Trump took the stage with his family, his wife Melania was visibly shocked when one exploded loudly on stage — it sounded like gunfire.

The woman next to me said, ‘Don’t worry, a miracle saved Trump. Even if that had been a gunshot, God would have saved him again. He has a date with destiny in November and nothing is going to change that.’
