The Carolina Panthers are expected to hire Dave Canales – the offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – as their new head coach as he will be tasked with getting quarterback Bryce Young up and running after a brutal rookie season.
Ian Rapoport, of the NFL Network, said in a video embedded in a tweet announcing the hire that “the contract still needs work,” but that Canales — a first-time coordinator — is the Panthers’ “guy” for the next season.
“A surprise, no doubt, a dark horse candidate,” he added.
“(…) Look at the year (Bucs’ QB) Baker Mayfield has had… a career year… back playing as well as he did early on with the Cleveland Browns. Worked with Russel Wilson. Obviously has ties to Seattle.
‘This is a man who they believe has a very bright, bright future. The Carolina Panthers are the next team to name their next head coach.”
Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales is expected to leave Tampa Bay to take over as head coach of the Carolina Panthers in the coming days
Canales may have had an advantage over other candidates for the Panthers job, knowing that Carolina hired former linebacker Dan Morgan as their president of football operations/general manager earlier this month. He and Canales spent eight seasons together with the Seahawks and are believed to have a close relationship.
