The major questions surrounding the disappearance and alleged murder of Carol Clay and Russell Hill in the Victorian Highlands may soon be answered.

Police have yet to reveal why Jetstar pilot Gregory Lynn, 56, has been charged with the murder of the two campers, and his version of events has never been aired in public.

On Monday, Lynn will return for his fourth court appearance, where allegations that he murdered the couple are expected to be tested in a courtroom for the first time.

Hill, 74, and Clay, 73, went missing from their camp in the Wonnangatta Valley, deep in the Victorian Alps, in March 2020.

They had been longtime friends and Mr. Hill was known to be an enthusiastic and well-prepared camper, and police and family expressed extreme concern after their campsite and car were set on fire.

The search for the pair quickly failed, and with no bodies, weapons or motives, police began the long job of piecing together what they believed happened in the remote Victorian wilderness.

It was early November 2021 that a breakthrough apparently emerged, as detectives revealed they were searching for the driver of a blue Nissan Patrol caught on camera leaving the area at an unusual time.

At the time, Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper said the “best theory” was that there was a confrontation between the couple and an unidentified third party, possibly over Hill’s drone.

Witnesses reported that Hill was flying a DJI Mavic drone over the remote camp in the hours before he went missing; he was never found.

Carol Clay, 73, was a well-respected member of the community and was once president of the Victorian Farm Women's Association.

Just a few weeks later, heavily armed special operations group officers pulled Mr. Lynn out of the desert near Arbuckle Junction in central Victoria.

The race car driver, known for his frequent camping trips, was taken without incident to the small Victorian town of Sale, where, over three days, he was questioned by investigators.

He was charged with two counts of murder on November 25, and just days later, investigators discovered remains later identified as belonging to the couple.

Mr. Lynn had previously been interviewed after it was identified that he was present in the area at the time of his disappearance.
