Shocking excuse of Mississippi girl, 15, filmed ‘murdering’ her mother at family’s home

A teenage girl who murdered her mother says she cannot remember shooting her dead in their home, a court has heard.

Carly Gregg, 15, is pleading insanity to murder after she shot and killed her mother Ashley Smylie and tried to kill her stepfather in their Mississippi home in March.

Gregg was in the midst of a mental health crisis and did not remember shooting her mother, a math teacher, psychiatrist Andrew Clark said when he testified in the teen’s defense Wednesday.

Dr. Clark said he suspects Gregg had a “blackout” of about 90 minutes on the day of the shooting, claiming her memory went blank after she let the dogs out.

The court heard that Gregg had been using marijuana for at least the day before the alleged incident. She had also been prescribed Lexapro and Zoloft – both medications for mood disorders.

Smylie had confronted the teen about her marijuana use on her way home from school the day she was killed, psychiatrist Andrew Clark said

Gregg reportedly told the psychiatrist that she had been suffering from “auditory hallucinations” for years before the murder, but the voices in her head had never “ordered” her to do anything.

“She suffered from mood swings, eating disorders, cutting herself, hearing voices and having difficulty sleeping, all of which continued until January 2024,” Dr Clark told the court.

Smylie had confronted the teen about her marijuana use on her way home from school the day she was killed, Dr. Clark said.

According to Dr. Clark, the teen had started smoking marijuana about six weeks before she shot her 40-year-old mother. She also reportedly had trouble with new medications.

“And then her mother found out she was smoking marijuana,” Dr. Clark said. “For Carly in particular, she was so concerned about her mother’s approval, so for her, this was a crisis.”

This week, shocking footage was shown in a Mississippi courtroom of Carly Gregg casually walking through her kitchen.

The teen had a “close but complicated relationship” with her mother and a loving bond with her stepfather, Dr. Clark said. Gregg’s relationship with her biological father, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, was more problematic.

Gregg was filmed calmly walking through the kitchen, on her cell phone and texting a friend, moments after shots were fired.

Prosecutors say after shooting her mother, Gregg used the teacher’s cellphone to text her stepfather, Heath, in an attempt to lure him home.

A text message was sent from Smylie’s phone to Heath: “When will you be home, honey?”

When Heath arrived home, police say Gregg shot him, hitting him once in the shoulder.

The court heard Heath grabbed Gregg’s gun before she could shoot him again, prompting her to flee.

Gregg faces 20 years to life in prison if found guilty.

She refused a deal with the prosecution that would have seen her sentenced to 40 years in prison.
