Michael Voss has been pursuing an alleged car thief who crashed a stolen car on Tuesday morning while the Carlton coach went to get coffee.

Two teenagers were speeding in a Mercedes on Barton St in Hawthorn when they lost control of the car and collided opposite the Barton Milk Bar just before 9am on Tuesday morning.

The milk bar owner, James Laskie, was making coffee for Voss at the time and he and the Blues coach went after it.

“When the two men got out of the vehicle and grabbed their belongings, they ran into the street,” Mr Laskie told the Herald Sun.

‘Michael Voss gave chase, and I went after him too.’

Voss tackled one of the teens to the ground as police arrived on the scene. The other perpetrator is believed to have escaped for the time being.

“They went into an apartment complex, it was quite crowded, and one of them managed to escape, but he (Voss) grabbed the second man and put him on the ground,” Mr Laskie said.

‘I tried to chase the other guy, but he was too fast for me. Luckily we were able to catch one.

“It was a pretty hectic morning.”

Mr Laskie added that police pulled a “large knife” from the trousers of the man who tackled Voss.

The car crashed near a school crossing and Mr. Laskie was relieved that no one was injured.

“It’s a very busy corner,” said Mr. Laskie.

“And that this happened without tragedy, I think everyone was very, very lucky this morning.”

More coming soon.
