Carlos Alcaraz beats Holger Rune 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 to reach Wimbledon semi-finals

Carlos Alcaraz beats his former doubles partner Holger Rune in straight sets in the 20-year-olds battle… as the Spanish world number 1 sets up Wimbledon in the semifinals against Daniil Medvedev

Carlos Alcaraz defeated Holger Rune in straight sets to reach the Wimbledon semifinals.

The world number 1 won 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 against his childhood friend to reach the last four for the first time in SW19, where he will face Daniil Medvedev.

Despite his serve faltering in the last match, the Spaniard fought on in a thrilling battle between two up and coming talents, both 20 years old. Only Boris Becker and Bjorn Borg won the men’s singles at Wimbledon at a young age.

Alcaraz and Rune played doubles side by side in their teens and were born less than a week apart.

“It’s a dream to be able to play a semi-final here,” said Alcaraz after beating his friend. The duo contested the youngest quarterfinal at Wimbledon in the Open Era.

After beating Matteo Berettini in the previous round, Alcaraz was looking forward to playing against the Dane, who is ranked sixth in the world. He said: ‘We shared a lot of great moments, we’ve been playing together since we were 12 years old. We know each other very well.’

He added: ‘I remember when we were 11 or 12, I think that was the first time I saw him at a tournament in Mallorca. In that tournament we played together for the first time – I remember that very well.’

Novak Djokovic and No. 8 seed Jannik Sinner face each other in the other semifinal.
