‘I told him he was lucky that the Croatia squad has already been announced!’: Carlo Ancelotti teases Luka Modric for his horrific miss in Real Madrid’s win over Cadiz – after the midfielder somehow missed open goal

  • Real Madrid defeated Cadiz 2-1 in the Spanish top flight on Thursday evening
  • Luka Modric missed an open goal from four yards and scored a third for his side
  • Carlo Ancelotti saw the funny side when asked about it after the game

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti gave a funny answer when asked about Luka Modric’s blatant miss on Thursday night, joking that he was lucky that Croatia had already announced their World Cup squad.

Modric had a moment to forget with his 2-0 score as Vinicius Jr made his way into the penalty area on the left and the ball rolled over the goal.

The Croat was there to hit it with the goal gaping and the keeper out of sight, but somehow managed to put the ball from four meters wide.

He looked like he wanted the ground to open as he lay face down on the grass, thinking about what had just happened.

Luckily for him, it didn’t cost his side as they secured a 2-1 win.

And boss Ancelotti clearly saw the funny side when asked about it after the game.

“I told him that the call for Croatia has fortunately already been made and that he has no problems,” he said.

Modric will have his side captained in Qatar after leading them to the final in 2018.

Croatia will look to excel in the tournament later this month after finishing second at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The pressure will be on Dalic’s shoulders en route to the tournament and he will hope that his selected squad will get the job done.

Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has been included in Dalic’s 26-man squad. He will be joined by Josko Gvardiol – who was widely linked in the summer with a £78m move to Chelsea.

The defense also includes Domagoj Vida, Borna Barisic, Josip Juranovic, Borna Sosa, Josip Stanisic, Martin Erlic and Josip Sutalo.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid superstar Luka Modric will head the Croatian midfield in Qatar. He will be joined by well-known names such as Marcelo Brozovic and Kovacic.

Modric – who has won 154 caps for his country – hopes Croatia can do one better than the 2018 tournament in Russia as he retires from international football after this year’s edition.

Perisic has been selected for the tournament in Qatar and will be joined up front by Andrej Kramaric and Ante Budimir.

Marko Livaja has also secured a place in the Croatian squad after excelling at home with Hajduk Split.
