Carey Mulligan sweetly recalls being pen pals with husband Marcus Mumford after meeting at a kids summer camp – before reconnecting 10 years later

Carey Mulligan remembers being pen pals with her husband Marcus Mumford as a child.

The Saltburn actress, 38, appeared on Good Morning Britain on Thursday where she spoke about her charity work with War Child – but also opened up about the beginning of her relationship with the Mumford & Sons singer, 37.

She told presenters Richard Madeley and Kate Garraway that they first met Marcus at a summer camp when they were children and then became pen pals to keep in touch after they left.

They then had a ten-year hiatus without contact before reconnecting when Carey was 24, and then married in 2012. They now share three children Evelyn, eight, and Wilfred, five, and a third child whose name has not been revealed, but was born in September 2023.

Speaking on GMB she said: ‘We went to the same summer camp as kids so we later became pen pals and that’s how we kept in touch, we didn’t have phones!

‘We used to fax a bit when fax machines were still cool! We need to get kids doing the pen pal thing again. It’s a good thing.

“Then we lost touch for about ten years and then we got back together.”

Presenter Richard then joked: ‘It was written in the stars!’

The show then showed a video of Marcus carrying her down a hallway on their wedding day as she said, “Oh, look at us.” That was because my shoes were so incredibly painful that I could no longer walk.

“So I just said I’m done, you’re going to have to carry me.” And then he put me down and he gasped and heaved.

Carey and Marcus got engaged in 2011 after just five months of dating, and married a year later in April 2012 in an English wedding in the Somerset countryside.

Last year, Carey admitted that she didn’t think her husband Marcus was “boyfriend material” when they first met as kids.

The star revealed exactly what she thought of the singer when they first met at camp, when she was just 12 years old and he was 10 years old.

She told presenters Richard Madeley and Kate Garraway that they first met Marcus at a summer camp when they were children and then became pen pals to keep in touch after they left.

She confessed that while she thought he was the “nicest person” she had ever met, she also wrote in her diary at the time that he was “definitely not boyfriend material.”

Speaking about the Smart podcast, she hilariously explained, “I wrote in my journal that he was the nicest, kindest person I had ever met and I gave him 9 1/2 out of 10.”

‘I also wrote in my diary that he was definitely not boyfriend material. I don’t mean that I ever had a boyfriend at the time. But I decided it wasn’t him,” she added.

Although they never dated in their teens, Carey stayed in touch with Marcus after camp and they were pen pals for a few years before losing contact.

However, they later reconnected as adults when they added each other on Facebook, prompting them to meet again when Carey was 24.

She shared, “The strange thing is that not long after we met again as adults, we both worked on the Cohen Brothers movie Inside Llewyn Davis and were both hired independently.”

They now share children Evelyn and Wilfred and Carey confirmed in October 2023 that they had welcomed their third child: a baby girl.

The Promising Young Woman actress revealed the happy news in Vogue’s November cover story.

“Here I am, ready for Vogue,” she joked. ‘I’m going to change [the baby]’, and then we’ll go find another shirt for mom.’

Carey opened up last year about her newborn daughter, whose name she has not yet revealed, and said she was her one ’10 out of 10 so far’.

Speaking to “Entertainment Tonight” at the Variety Power of Women Los Angeles gala, she said, “Oh, she’s amazing. Awesome. Good baby, 10 out of 10, so far. We’ll see how long that lasts.’

Elsewhere, the star also recently opened up about balancing her successful career and raising her family during an interview with Vanity Fair.

‘I think it also changes as they get older. Now it’s different,” Carey admitted as she talked about how parenthood has “influenced” her “career choices” over the years.

Speaking on GMB she said: 'We went to the same summer camp as kids so we later became pen pals and that's how we kept in touch, we didn't have phones!'

“If they’re small, they’re portable. Now that mine are getting older, it will become clearer what is and isn’t possible for us.’

She also reflected on how both she and her husband have the opportunity to pursue their passions for their careers.

She said: ‘I’m so lucky, we’re both so lucky that at the moment we get to do jobs because we want to do them, not because we have to.’

“And that’s such a luxury in life and in the world to be able to do that. I think it’s very clear when it’s the right time to do something and when it’s not, whereas I think I’ve probably debated it more in the past. I feel very parched and dry.”
