Tragedy on bucket list trip to Australia’s Cape York after driver killed in crash and his female passenger choppered to hospital

A road trip to Cape York, Australia, ended in tragedy for an elderly couple after they crashed their four-wheel drive on a remote dirt road.

The silver Toyota LandCruiser was traveling on the Peninsula Development Road, about 30km north of the Archer River Roadhouse, when it left the road and crashed into a tree around 2pm on Friday.

Emergency services, including a rescue helicopter, were called to the area, about a five-hour drive north of Cairns, where the 68-year-old male driver was pronounced dead at the scene and a 65-year-old female passenger was airlifted to hospital in Cairns.

There were no other passengers in the car and no other vehicles were involved.

The pair are known to have come from New South Wales.

The Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit is investigating how the accident happened.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage is urged to contact police.

“Two patients are being treated but it appears the driver may have had a medical condition,” a Queensland Ambulance spokesperson said The courier post.

An elderly man was also taken to Cairns Hospital in a serious condition following a two-vehicle crash in Port Douglas.

“A man in his 70s was taken to hospital in serious condition after suffering a medical condition shortly before the crash,” the spokesman said.
