Cannes staffer breaks silence on red carpet run-in with Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson
“They couldn’t hear me!” A Cannes employee breaks the silence during a meeting with Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson on the red carpet
- Vincent Chapalain has been working as a ‘red carpet manager’ in Cannes for 10 years
- He says Hanks and Wilson asked if they should go back to join the rest of the Asteroid City film crew when they were photographed.
- Because the cries of surrounding photographers were so loud, they screamed
For a moment he looked like red carpet roadkill.
But the Cannes staffer who was photographed under the pointing finger of Tom Hanks, one of the world’s biggest stars, and his wife Rita Wilson have stepped forward to insist it was all a misunderstanding.
Vincent Chapalain worked for the Festival du Cannes as a ‘red carpet manager’ for ten years.
C’est un misunderstanding! Vincent Chapalain, the Cannes staffer who was photographed in a tense moment with Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, says the pair simply asked if they should go back to the beginning of the tapestry
Chapalain, just as eager to cut down on the fuss, has now confirmed Wilson’s story on Twitter. “They just asked me if they should go back to the beginning of the carpet with the rest of the film crew (I’m not security.) And with the yelling of photographers, they had to talk loudly,” he said.
On Tuesday, he was seen exchanging curt words with Hanks – whose hot temper has been well documented – and his wife.

Rita was quick to clear up the confusion, insisting that they basically ask Chapalain whether or not they wanted to go back to the beginning of the red carpet, where the rest of the crew from Hanks’ new movie Asteroid City was.
Chapalain, just as happy to clear up the fuss, has now confirmed her story.

In the photos, Hanks and his wife can be seen gesticulating behind them and covering their ears with their hands.
While Monday night’s interaction wasn’t as tense as it first seemed, the Forrest Gump star has been known to have a short fuse in the past.
