Man is shot dead in a suspected gangland hit in western Sydney – as cops hunt for the gunman and discover a burnt out car nearby

A man was shot dead in a suburb before the suspected getaway car was found burnt out two miles away.

Emergency responders were called to Sutherland Street, Canley Heights in Sydney’s west, about 6.50am on Sunday evening after reports of shots fired.

Paramedics treated the man, believed to be in his 30s, for gunshot wounds at the scene, but he could not be revived.

A short time later a car was found on fire in the nearby suburb of Wakeley.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews extinguished the fire.

The suspected shooter is still on the run.

The police have received no further reports of injuries.

Officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene, which will be forensically examined.

The incidents – which are believed to be linked – are being investigated by officers from Fairfield, assisted by the State Crime Command’s homicide unit.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
