Canelo Alvarez revealed he will need surgery on his left hand immediately after beating fierce rival Gennady Golovkin via unanimous decision in their Las Vegas trilogy fight.
Four years after their most recent encounter ended in a narrow, contentious victory for Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs), the four-division world champion left little doubt about this verdict.
The 32-year-old Mexican star delivered an extensive beating to now 40-year-old Golovkin (42-2-1) in the opening eight rounds, repeatedly testing Triple G’s famed chin with combinations and overhand rights.

The judges all scored surprisingly well for Alvarez: 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113, thanks in large part to a late and impressively spirited kickback from Golovkin.
Canelo, who paid his respects to his once sparring partner and more recently bitter rival in the immediate aftermath, also revealed that he was dealing with a significant injury during the fight.
‘He [Golovkin] is a tough fighter but i’m happy [I won]Canelo said in his post-fight interview.
‘After this I have to have surgery on my hand. On my left. But I’m a good one, I’m a warrior and that’s why I’m here.”
Canelo kept his entire collection of super middleweight belts with the trilogy win
