Wednesday’s NHL Draft will be a night David Reinbacher will always remember, but for Carey Price, the night will always be defined by forgetfulness.
The Canadiens goaltender was supposed to announce 18-year-old Reinbacher as the fifth overall pick, but couldn’t remember the Austrian’s name on stage in Nashville.
“Les Canadiens de Montreal are proud to select, David…” Price said before holding back a long silence and an awkward laugh as he realized his memory was failing him.
One fan even shouted out Reinbacher’s last name to try and help, but it wasn’t until Canadiens GM Kent Hughes took the mic that the pick was officially announced.
“We planned it that way,” Hughes joked. “David Reinbacher.”

Price also made light of his blunder on Twitter afterwards, to write“Boy, that was embarrassing. Sorry David… Reinbacher.”
Regardless of how the news was reported, Reinbacher looked pleased as he posed for a photo with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.
Reinbacher became the highest drafted Austrian defenseman in NHL Draft history with the selection.
Elsewhere in the draft, Conor Bedard was selected as expected by the Chicago Blackhawks No. 1 overall.
The 17-year-old Bedard is the second No. 1 pick in franchise history, tied with Patrick Kane.
