The post, shared over the weekend, was captioned: “This restaurant covered the ‘No Tipping’ option with a sticker to enforce tipping.”
An accompanying photo then showed a credit card machine with black tape covering the portion of the screen.
The two printed labels simply say: ‘Tip, thank you.’
It meant customers were only allowed to use the preset options of 13, 15 and 18 percent.
The name of the restaurant was not mentioned, but the original poster elaborated further in the comments: ‘The screen was a touchscreen so I pressed the sticker lol.
“She stared at me as I pressed the sticker that hid the ‘No Tip’ option.
‘Do you still have to tip if you served yourself and arranged your own table? Because it was that kind of restaurant. I’m all for being served, but I’ve done it myself.
‘It’s funny that there was no service, just her doing her job and expecting a tip.’
Unsurprisingly, the post was quickly flooded with comments from other disgruntled customers decrying the tipping culture in both Canada and the US.
It continued: ‘I hate that it has now become an opt-out system instead of opt-in.
‘Things like service charges and mandatory tips make it difficult for me to eat out. I think it’s better for me to eat at home anyway.’
Unsurprisingly, the post was quickly flooded with comments from other disgruntled customers decrying the tipping culture in both Canada and the US.
One person described the move as a “new low,” while another reminded readersipping is OPTIONAL.’
Someone else suggested: “I consider myself a generous tipper, but I wouldn’t tip at all if that’s how they’re going to play this game.”
“I’d look them dead in the eye if I peeled off the sticker and hit ‘no tip,'” another commented.
