Canada is the latest victim of the ‘Drake Curse’ following World Cup loss to Belgium

Those who believe in the ‘Drake curse’ now have a new piece of evidence to point to as proof that the curse does indeed exist after Canada’s 1-0 loss to Belgium.

The Canadian national team played their World Cup opener against Belgium in Group F on Wednesday, but suffered an embarrassing defeat despite dominant periods of the match.

Promising left-back Alphonso Davies could have given Canada the opening goal – and the first ever at a World Cup – with a penalty in the 10th minute of the game, but it was saved by goalkeeper Thibault Courtois.

With the result, Canada became the first World Cup team since 1978 to attempt at least 20 shots and get one penalty and still fail to score a goal.

However, some have argued that the source of the Maple Leafs’ desperation is none other than Canadian artist Drake.

The ‘Drake curse’ has shown itself multiple times at various high-profile sporting events after a team was publicly endorsed by the Canadian rapper.

This support usually comes in the form of a photo with Drake and a prominent member of the team is in a photo with Drake, or he positions himself wearing the team’s jersey.

Davies also posted a photo of Drake holding his Instagram story wearing his national team jersey days before the tournament.

It is also noted that Drake is a well-known gambler who has lost big on several recent bets.

He recently lost more than $2 million betting on former UFC champion Israel Adesanya to defend his title against Alex Pereira.

He also recently placed a losing $649,000 accumulator bet with Barcelona to win El Clásico against Real Madrid and Arsenal to beat Leeds.

After the game, the Canadian players were praised by both the media and their coach.

Canadian manager John Herdman shared a similar reaction to the game during his post-match comments.
