Camilla is the star of the show while the Queen takes center stage in a Jane Austen parody

The Queen has inspired a Jane Austen parody for her first literary festival.

Comedy troupe Austentatious will don period costume to improvise a play based on a fictional Austen title created by Camilla as the centerpiece of next month’s Queen’s Reading Room Festival at Hampton Court Palace.

The organizers promise the event will be ‘a literary festival like no other’ – breaking with the stuffy convention of ‘authors plugging in their own books’. The Queen has rolled up her sleeves in organizing the one-day extravaganza on June 11.

The festival will also honor the life and work of Wolf Hall novelist Dame Hilary Mantel, despite the late author’s controversial relationship with the royal family.

In a 2013 speech, described by critics as “poisonous,” Dame Hilary referred to the Princess of Wales, then the Duchess of Cambridge, as being “designed by a committee and built by craftsmen, with a perfect plastic smile and the linchpin of her limbs turned by hand and glossy varnished’.

It is hoped that the festival will become one of Camilla’s legacy projects by inspiring more people to start reading.

Vikki Perrin, managing director of the Queen’s Reading Room, said: “The Queen is so passionate about books and sharing reading advice,” adding that whenever she went to visit her, she was “sitting in an armchair, literally surrounded by books.”

“We hope this is the start of something very special that will grow, rather than something one-off.”

One of the King’s favorite writers, Robert Harris, is also taking part.

The Queen launched The Reading Room, which recommends four books four times a year, on Instagram in January 2021.
