Cameron Norrie edged past Taylor Fritz in Sydney but was unable to prevent Great Britain from being knocked out of the United Cup by the United States.
After the ‘city final’ began with Katie Swan’s loss to Madison Keys, Norrie edged out Fritz in three sets over two hours and 15 minutes at the Ken Rosewall Arena.
The British number one made the decisive break in the ninth game of the third set, prevailing 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

GB had earlier gone 1-0 when Keys came from behind to beat Swan 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The United States regained the lead in the tie when world number three Jessica Pegula posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Harriet Dart.
Frances Tiafoe sealed the victory for the USA after coming from a set down to beat Dan Evans 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Norrie has won all three of his United Cup matches in the build-up to the Australian Open.
The United States advanced to the semifinals that begin on Friday.
The defeat meant that Great Britain failed to progress as the best runners-up from the three city finals.
