On a day when Wimbledon handed out its usual wild cards to British players, Cam Norrie was the last home player left at Queen’s Club.
The most reliable player in the GB ranks is through to the quarter-finals of the cinch championships and certainly has no need for any of the 10 privileged entries handed out to Brits for the main draw at SW19.
Norrie reversed this week’s trend by taking a victory over Australian turf expert Jordan Thompson, whom he came back to beat 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. On Thursday he will face the American Sebastian Korda.
Southend’s Ryan Peniston fell to No. 2 Holger Rune of Denmark 6–3, 6–4, leaving just one domestic entrant in singles, while Andy Murray withdrew from his scheduled doubles match alongside Norrie due to fatigue.
Peniston was one of the grateful recipients of a main draw singles wildcard to Wimbledon, worth a minimum of £55,000 for those who get them. British tennis was forced to return to the near-400 rankings to ensure a quota of domestic first round entrants.

More than 20 years older is five-time champion Venus Williams, who has been awarded a wild card at the age of 43 to make her 24th appearance at the All England Club, ranking under 600.
Harriet Dart defeated Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to make it to the quarter-finals of the Rothesay Classic in Edgbaston.
