Cam Murray SNIPS the Wallabies and Eddie Jones by dedicating his future to South Sydney after signing a $4.6 million blockbuster deal with the Rabbitohs…as Bunnies finally get some good news after a week of turmoil

The Wallabies will not get their hands on Cameron Murray for the 2027 World Cup after he brought some peace to the club and signed a contract extension until the end of 2028.

Murray, who was under contract with Souths until 2025, had previously expressed interest in a code change as Rugby Australia officials set their sights on grabbing some of the NRL’s top talent ahead of a 2027 home world championship.

But club captain Murray, 25, closed that door and showed loyalty to the Rabbitohs after a week of turmoil by signing the monstrous extension that will tie him to the club until he turns 30.

“This club has always been my home and I’ve never seen myself playing anywhere else,” said Murray.

“It was a no-brainer for me to extend my contract here and I am grateful to be able to represent South Sydney, our members and fans every day.

Eddie Jones and the Wallabies had targeted the star playmaker for a code switch

“The club has always looked after me and I feel that I have always done my best to put the best interests of the club first in everything I do.

“I am very grateful to the club for putting their trust in me to be part of the next five years.

“It is now my responsibility to repay that trust with my performances on the pitch and my actions off the pitch.

“It is an absolute honor to be captain of this club, to play alongside my teammates and to work with my coaches and the club’s staff.

“I’m looking forward to the next five years, but as always my focus and that of the team is on our next assignment.”

South Sydney must win their final round against the Roosters to reach the final, after a tumultuous past seven days that included the departure of club chief executive and assistant coach Sam Burgess.

Murray has made 146 NRL appearances for the Rabbitohs since he was in first grade in 2017.

As of 2019, he has played for NSW and six test matches for Australia, including victory in the 2022 Rugby League World Cup Final as the side’s vice-captain.

Rabbitoh’s head of football Mark Ellison said extending the club’s captaincy contract was a priority.

“Cameron is one of the top footballers in our league, he’s our leader on the pitch, he’s everything a South Sydney man should be,” said Ellison.

“I’ve had the pleasure of watching Cameron develop, not just as a player, but as a person since he was four years old.

“He comes from a strong family, he was born and raised in South Sydney, and he has become the man all his teammates want to play with.

“He gives everything he has every time he plays for this club, his state and his country.

“We are delighted to know that he sees his long-term future in rugby league with the South Sydney Rabbitohs.”
