Callum Wilson fulfills his promise to do the MACARENA at the request of West Ham’s Mikhail Antonio

Callum Wilson fulfills his promise to celebrate the MACARENA as a goal celebration after opening the scoring for Newcastle at West Ham in 5-1 thrashing… after telling Hammers striker Michail Antonio he would

Callum Wilson celebrated the opening goal as Newcastle beat West Ham 5-1 at the London Stadium with a classic 1990s dance move: the Macarena.

But the celebration – Wilson’s first of the night before his second on the scoresheet 40 minutes later – was more than a moment of spontaneity and had, in fact, been nine months in the making.

The Newcastle striker was instructed to celebrate the goal by his podcast co-presenter, West Ham striker Mikhail Antonio, on an episode of The footballer’s soccer podcast which aired in August 2022.

Wilson had vowed to do it if he scored at home against the Hammers, and after just six minutes on the pitch, he had a chance to make good on the promise.

An excerpt from the podcast episode shows that Wilson was the one who ordered Antonio to find him a new party.

Newcastle got off better on Wednesday evening in the game between the two podcast hosts

The 31-year-old’s only demand was that he be allowed to add “his classic signature salute.”

“Once I’ve done that, I can do whatever you want me to do,” Wilson finished.

“You could finish it off with the salute,” Antonio mused at the time, before accepting the challenge.

“I don’t want this donkey to dance like you did before,” Wilson warned his co-host.

After a short pause, Antonio told him to ‘do the Macarena’. With a nice little salute at the end.’

Wilson agreed, teasing, “I could do it to you, you know.” Do the Macarena against West Ham! Oh my word. That would be classic.’

After rubbing salt in the wounds by doing it with West Ham beaten, Wilson told Sky Sports: “Me and Mikhail Antonio are doing a podcast together and he gave me a stick and says whoever scores should celebrate and today was fun to do it for West Ham fans.

When asked about forgetting to do it to Antonio’s face, Wilson added: “Yeah you get caught up in the moment and it was one of those things to do a dance for the fans got a baton from the fans, but it’s nothing personal.

But Antonio must have been disappointed by Wednesday night’s dismal result for his club

The result in the capital left West Ham deeply dejected and still sitting 15th in the table

Before the podcast derby, Wilson taunted his co-host while reminding him of the months-old promise.

“I like to score in that spot [London Stadium] and I promised to do the Macarena,” Wilson said in their latest episode. “I want all the bubbles to blow on me as I do it when I score there. But maybe I should do it from the couch – I’ll warm up at the Macarena!’

“I’m going to kick you,” Antonio laughed. “I’m on the couch, but if you’re there, I’ll just kick you!”

Wilson has been in fine goalscoring form for the Magpies before being on the scoresheet in Newcastle’s 2-0 win against Manchester United on Sunday.

Newcastle’s victory in East London helped Eddie Howe’s ascendant Magpies cement their hold on the European places as they remained third. In contrast, Antonio’s West Ham side were booed at the final whistle.

The Hammers remain fixed at the bottom of the table, in 15th place thanks to their better goal difference, but level with Bournemouth in the relegation places.
