Surveillance footage of a California man who allegedly shot his daughter’s ex-boyfriend in the head after he tried to force himself into her car reveals he had tried to turn himself in to authorities before going on the run .
When Jose G. Mendoza, 59, became aware that his daughter was allegedly being chased by her ex-boyfriend in his vehicle, the 59-year-old pulled up at the 37000 block of Sierra Highway and allegedly shot him in the head.
Surveillance footage released by police ABC 7 shows Mendoza on a sheriff’s desk, presumably attempting to turn himself in, it remains unclear when the footage was taken.
The footage shows the 59-year-old walking into the sheriff’s office, waiting at the counter for a short while, then turning and slowly leaving.
Mendoza appeared to be holding a cell phone at the time and remained at large on Wednesday.
Deputies responded to a call for domestic violence at the 37000 block of Sierra Highway, in Palmdale, California, shortly before 5 p.m. Monday.

Gutierrez, 26, who was unresponsive when police arrived on the scene, was taken to hospital where he later succumbed to his gunshot wounds.
When they arrived at the scene, 26-year-old Giovannie Gutierrez was found unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
Gutierrez allegedly confronted his ex-girlfriend, Mendoza’s daughter, at her Diamond Buick GMC Palmdale workplace and took her cellphone.
In an attempt to recover the device, Mendoza’s daughter set up a nearby meeting, but once the cellphone was returned, Gutierrez attempted to smash her car mirror, so she sped off.
Witnesses told police Gutierrez was in his car, a white Chrysler 300M sedan, and “sat behind his ex-girlfriend” who was driving a gray compact car.
During the chase, the two cars collided at least once, authorities said.
“Detectives have learned that Gutierrez was the source of the domestic violence call-to-service,” police said.
Gutierrez had reportedly tried to break into his ex-girlfriend’s car while seeking help from relatives, who called 911.
“She told us at the time she was in her car and Giovannie was trying to get in,” Detective Derrick Alfred told ABC 7.

Detective Derrick Alfred said Gutierrez allegedly grabbed the keys from Mendoza’s daughter, tried to open the door to pull her out, and reportedly put his hands around her throat.

“He reached through the window after already taking her keys, tried to open the door, tried to pull her out of the car and at one point had his hands wrapped around her throat.”
As Gutierrez attempted to get into her vehicle, a white Ford Ranger pickup truck arrived at the scene, investigators said.
“A passenger got out of the Ford Ranger, approached Gutierrez and shot him once in the head,” police said.
“The shooter has been identified as Jose G. Mendoza of Little Rock.”
Detectives said Mendoza’s daughter was unaware he was coming to the scene.
After police arrived, Gutierrez, who became unresponsive, was taken to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his gunshot wounds.
Mendoza is described as a male Hispanic, with black hair and brown eyes. He is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 140 pounds.
“Mendoza is believed to be armed with a semi-automatic pistol and should not be approached,” police said.
