The driver responsible was Lindsay Turmelle, 43, who was sentenced Thursday afternoon to 90 days in jail and 90 days of home detention for reckless driving.

After the horrific collision that occurred just a two-minute drive from her $1.3 million home, Turmelle remained at the scene.

On Thursday, Turmelle admitted in court that he accidentally hit and killed the mother.

Prosecutors alleged Turmelle was distracted at the time of the crash, but no evidence was found indicating she was on her phone.

Turmelle issued a heartbreaking apology to Embree's family members sitting in the courtroom.

“I can't imagine what this has been like for you. I pray for your comfort. I pray you heal,” she sobbed.

“I pray for your understanding and I have prayed for your forgiveness. I can't compare what I go through to what your family goes through on a daily basis.”

Her moving apology brought many people in the courtroom to tears as they audibly cried at the time.

The deputy district attorney for the case read a letter from Bob Embree, the deceased's husband.

Her husband deliberately did not want to come to the trial because he did not want to see or hear the person who murdered his wife.

In Mr Embree's letter, he asked the court to sentence the Turmelle to a maximum of one year in prison.

Joseph Hawk, Embree's father, responded, “If God and Christine have forgiven you, why shouldn't I forgive you?”
