Beloved comedian Cal Wilson has died at the age of 53.

The New Zealand-born TV personality died on Wednesday after a short illness.

She was surrounded by friends and family at Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney.

She leaves behind her husband Chris and son Digby.

Wilson also worked as a radio and television presenter, actress and writer, and rose to prominence in Australia.

“Kel’s generosity, talent and friendships have been a constant on the Australian comedy scene for the past twenty years,” her management company Token Artists said in a statement.

“Kal was loved by her family, friends, fans and peers, and a huge hole has been ripped in the heart of our community.”

Wilson moved from Christchurch, New Zealand to Melbourne in 2003 where she appeared on the show Skithouse.

She was given her own Netflix stand-up special while also appearing on Spicks and Specks, Would I Lie To You and Good News Week.

The 53-year-old has performed at the Melbourne Comedy Festival 14 times, most recently co-hosting The Great Australian Bake Off.
