A man has died and a woman hospitalised after both being hurled off a jet ski in a horror collision in Far North Queensland
A man has died and a woman is in hospital after their jet ski collided with mangroves on a river in Far North Queensland.
The 56-year-old man died at the scene while the 60-year-old woman was rushed to Cairns Hospital about 10.30am on Friday.
Their jet ski collided with mangroves north of the Stratford Boat Ramp on the Barron River near Cairns and both were launched from the vehicle.
The man suffered fatal chest and head injuries while the woman was taken to hospital in a stable condition.
Far North District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Duane Amos said members of the public attempted to resuscitate the man before he died.
Both parties are from Brinmead, also in Cairns.
Queensland Police have launched an investigation into the incident and officers saw the blue jet ski towed away from the area shortly after the crash.
Police are now preparing a report for the coroner.
A 56-year-old man has died and a 60-year-old woman was rushed to Cairns Hospital after their jet ski collided with mangroves in Cairns about 10.30am on Friday.
Senior Sergeant Amos said there was “floating debris” where the incident occurred.
“They’re small waterways, it doesn’t take much for accidents to happen,” he said.
“There are also other areas where you can confuse your area of interest with shallow or deep water.”
He added that “dangerous and unexpected conditions” could arise in the waterways and that anyone visiting the river should be prepared.
“This is not the outcome at this time of year that we want at this time of year when we should be with family,” Senior Sergeant Amos said.
