Cade Cunningham to miss rest of season for Detroit Pistons following left shin surgery

According to ESPNFormer Detroit Pistons No. 1 overall pick Cade Cunningham plans to have season-ending surgery on his left shin.

Cunningham has missed a lot of time this season dealing with an injury believed to be a stress fracture in his left shin.

He is expected to make a full recovery in time for next season’s training camp.

Cunningham has been sidelined since November 9 and has been trying to treat the injury with rest and rehab to see if it improves, however that hasn’t worked and more treatment is now needed.

After consulting with several different doctors, Pistons advisers and Cunningham decided it was best to undergo surgery and begin preparations to be healthy for the 2023-2024 season.

Throughout the 12 games he played this year, the 21-year-old point guard averaged 19.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and six assists.

As a rookie last year, Cunningham averaged 17.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.6 assists, but saw a tremendous increase in his numbers during the second half of the season when his numbers increased to 21.1 points, 5 7 rebounds and 6.5 assists.

Detroit has greatly missed Cunningham’s impact on the court this season, as they currently have the worst record in the NBA at 7-22.

Having the star point guard miss the year, however, will firmly cement rookie point guard Jaden Ivey as the team’s primary ball handler going forward.

At this point in the season Ivey has averaged 15.3 points and 4 assists, and 4.4 rebounds.
