Cabaret star Fritz Wepper dead at 82: The German actor was the debonair gigolo who married Marisa Berenson in the 1972 classic Liza Minnelli film

Fritz Wepper has died at the age of 82 in Munich, Germany, it was reported on Wednesday.

He died “peacefully” while in a hospice facility after a long illness, his wife Susanne Kellermann said German newspaper Bild.

The German star was best known for her collaboration with Liza Minnelli, Michael York and Marisa Berenson in the classic 1972 film Cabaret.

Fritz gave a heartfelt performance as a German Jew named Fritz Wendel who wanted to be a gigolo, in Bob Fosse’s Oscar-winning film.

His character also pined for wealthy Jewish heiress Natalia Landauer, who was played by model-actress Marisa Berenson. Later, Fritz and Natalia are married by a rabbi.

The Fosse film was set in Berlin in 1931.

It was about American comedian Sally Bowles (Minnelli) who meets British academic Brian Roberts (York), who is completing his university studies.

Despite Brian’s confusion about his sexuality, the pair become lovers.

But the arrival of the wealthy and decadent playboy Maximilian von Heune (Helmut Griem) complicates matters for both of them.

This love triangle is set against the rise of the Nazi Party and the collapse of the Weimar Republic.

Wepper had a long and busy career that included other hits.

He starred in the popular crime series Derrick, which aired from 1974 to 1998.
