BYU’s Cosmo Cougar has built a reputation on pushing the boundaries of what a mascot can do athletically, with a wild stunt this weekend almost ending tragically for the man in the costume.
Cosmo’s latest stunt involved doing a cartwheel into a huge backflip. The problem is that the Cougars’ mascot had to flip a moving vehicle in mid-air.
Cosmo starts the run from the 20-yard line and builds up a lot of speed before starting his acrobatics.
The cartwheel and dismount are done perfectly before he goes into the air.
Midway through the backflip, Cosmo slams his head into the moving vehicle with a loud crash, causing the crowd around him to gasp.
After regaining his footing, Cosmo gets up and runs through the end zone to show everyone that he narrowly avoided disaster and that he is doing well.
BYU’s mascot, Cosmo Cougar, tried a wild stunt during Saturday’s football game
The move almost ended in tragedy when Cosmo hit his head on the top of the vehicle
The thud on the top of the vehicle was a sign of things to come, as BYU’s undefeated season ended Saturday with a loss to then-three-win Kansas.
The Cougars lost 17-13 to the Jayhawks and dropped eight spots in the College Football Playoff rankings with the loss.
BYU will now likely have to win the Big 12 to guarantee itself a spot in the 12-team playoffs.
A two-loss Cougars team might be on the outside looking in at the logjam of teams around the bubble with better resumes than BYU.
Cosmo will surely come up with something even more ridiculous as the Cougars season gets closer to its end.
