A teenager who was allegedly driving a car that smashed into a tree in a crash that killed five of his mates had two prior speeding offences and a month-long licence suspension on his record, a court has heard.
Tyrell Edwards, 18, was refused bail on Thursday afternoon at Picton Local Court, hours after he was charged with five counts of dangerous driving causing death.
Edwards, 18, was the sole survivor when the Nissan ute he was allegedly driving smashed into a tree on East Parade in the small town of Buxton, 100km southwest of Sydney shortly before 8pm on Tuesday night.
Three girls and two boys – all friends from Picton High School aged between 14 and 16 – died at the scene.
Edwards was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries and was on Wednesday evening charged with five counts of dangerous driving occasioning death.

A crowd of devastated loved ones filed into Picton Local Court on Thursday, the 18-year-old having spent the night in a police cell.
Family and friends were not permitted inside the court during Edwards’ hearing but were able to listen in to the matter online.
Edwards appeared in court via video link. One of the victim’s father’s attended the case and cried.
The 18-year-old was formally refused bail and will return to court on November 16.
The court was told Edwards will receive mental health support in custody.
Back in Buxton, heartbroken friends, family and school mates continue to mourn the loss of the five teenagers whose young lives were cut short in the horror smash.
