Lidl celebrated a record-breaking Christmas as it drew more than 1 million customers away from rivals and had Britain’s busiest day ever.

The German discount chain attracted 1.3 million customers in the four weeks to December 25 from Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons, among others.

Sales were up 24.5 per cent from a year earlier and Lidl said it took £62.8 million in spend from traditional grocers.

Due to the huge increase in demand, Lidl had its busiest day – December 23 – since it opened its doors in the UK 28 years ago.

Boss Ryan McDonnell said more shoppers are coming through its doors “every week”. The 46-year-old said shoppers are switching to lower the cost of a weekly shop as households face rising food, utility and mortgage bills.

McDonnell said, “We don’t see this momentum continuing until 2023.”

Lidl trailed German rival Aldi, which posted its best-ever December with sales in the month exceeding £1.4bn for the first time, up 26 per cent from a year earlier.

Both discounters have seen an influx of customers since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, driving energy bills skyrocketing.

Their combined market share has risen from 14 per cent a year ago to 16.3 per cent today, trailing only the UK’s largest grocer, Tesco, which holds 27.5 per cent of the market.
