Alleged hijacker is accused of horrifying act after Adelaide cop is punched while trying to save bus with 26 passengers on board

Police claim during an alleged early morning bus hijacking the man who ended up in custody tried to take a police gun in a dramatic vision of the arrest.

The incident took place in Adelaide at around 6am on Saturday.

A 28-year-old Adelaide man was tasered twice and pepper-sprayed before police could get him out of the bus driver’s seat.

A male officer suffered a wound to his eye – which became irritated by the capsicum spray – and a female officer suffered an injury to her jaw after allegedly being punched.

Footage filmed by a member of the public suggests the alleged perpetrator attempted to grab a police pistol from one of the officer’s hips.

“I didn’t let him get your gun buddy, I held him,” the injured female officer said in the video as fellow officers tried to assess her injuries.

“I took it, I took it, I didn’t let him,” she said.

“I saw it,” said a male officer.

The entire time, the female officer’s face is bright red and contorted in pain. She asks a paramedic for some kind of spray.

“I just don’t know if my jaw is broken,” she said.

‘He hit me twice in the jaw. Really hard,” she claimed.

Police were called to a Franklin Street bus depot around 5:45 a.m. Saturday to report that an intoxicated man was trying to hijack a private charter bus with 26 elderly passengers on board.

When officers arrived, they claim the man was sitting in the driver’s seat of the bus in an agitated state.

Police approached the man and asked him to leave the bus, but he refused, a police spokesman said.

Officers tried to remove him from the driver’s seat when two officers were struck repeatedly in the head, the spokesman said.

“Police used capsicum spray in an attempt to subdue the man, but this was unsuccessful and he continued to try to drive the bus,” the spokesperson said.

‘Officers attended to assist and a third member was kicked in the head and suffered a split lip.’

The spokesman said a police dog was called in to help remove the man from the bus, but he was also attacked and his handler was punched in the face.

Two officers were also taken to hospital after one member suffered an eye injury and a second officer suffered a head injury

“Police tasered the man, but were unable to free the man from the driver’s seat,” the spokesperson said.

‘Capsicum spray was used on the man a second time and he was successfully removed from the bus and arrested.’

Images show that the man was eventually pushed to the ground by five officers. His clothes somehow came off during the arrest, and he screamed as police put on the handcuffs.

A police spokesman said he has been charged with four counts of assault on an emergency worker and illegal use of a motor vehicle.

Two officers were also taken to hospital after one member suffered an eye injury and a second officer suffered a head injury.

One bus passenger had to be treated for the effects of paprika spray.
