A man has been shot dead by police during a search warrant north of Brisbane.

Officers were searching a home in Burpengary East on Saturday afternoon when they were confronted by the man, leading them to open fire.

The man, 29, died at the scene despite efforts by police and paramedics to resuscitate him.

Police say no one else is wanted in connection with the shooting.

A roadblock was set up on Margaret Street at 6.45pm and police have begun questioning people in homes surrounding the property.

Detectives on the scene told reporters the man was known to police, but declined to give further details, including how many bullets had been fired.

“While attending this address, police encountered a 29-year-old man,” Superintendent Ben Fadian said told ABC.

‘This man approached the police, after which the police unloaded their firearms.

“I can also report that there is no threat to public safety as a result of this incident and no other person is sought in this matter.

No police were injured in the shooting and all officers have received assistance.

At the time of the shooting, there were people in the house who have since made statements to the police.

Ambulance personnel were on the scene within five minutes, but could do nothing to save the man.

Superintendent Fadian sent his “condolences to the dead man’s family.”

Neighbors describe the neighborhood as generally quiet, despite the occasional jeers.

A crime scene has now been established at the house and police are investigating the circumstances behind the man’s death.

The Ethical Standards Command is leading the investigation on behalf of the State Coroner and will be overseen by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
