Burnley Football Club have issued a statement condemning an attack on the Aston Villa team bus after they were beaten 3-1 by Unai Emery’s side at Turf Moor on Sunday.
Reports of the BBC suggest a rock was thrown through the Villa coach’s front window as they traveled home from the match.
The incident appears to have happened at Junction 10 of the M65, about two miles from Turf Moor, on Burnley’s grounds.
A club statement from Burnley read: ‘Burnley Football Club are saddened and appalled to learn of an attack on the Aston Villa team bus at Junction 10 of the M65 after today’s game.
“Having spoken to Villa, we are relieved to hear that no one was injured in the incident. We strongly condemn this behavior and will support Lancashire Police in their efforts to find those responsible.’
Supt Melita Worswick, of Lancashire Police, said in a statement: ‘This incident occurred as heavy traffic was leaving the area following the Burnley vs Aston Villa football match.
“It’s only fortunate that the stone didn’t cause further damage, or cause anyone to be seriously injured or even killed.
“We cannot say at this time whether this was a targeted attack, but investigations are ongoing and will be part of our investigation.
“We are now committed to finding the person or persons responsible and are asking anyone with information to get in touch. If you have information or a dashcam that can help us, please contact us as soon as possible.’
Matty Cash scored twice for the Villains in the space of twelve minutes today, opening his goalscoring tally for the new Premier League season. He scored twice from close range to give his side a 2-0 lead.
Lyle Foster got one back for the hosts just after the break, but Emery’s side secured their second win of the season when Moussa Diaby volleyed into the bottom right corner of the goal.
The result means Villa rise six points to seventh in the Premier League, three points behind Manchester City, who are top of the league.
Vincent Kompany’s Burnley has now lost its first two league matches to Manchester City and now to Villa, conceding three goals in both matches.
Following their opening Premier League game, Burnley again condemned the behavior of some individuals in their stadium, issuing a strong statement claiming the club would not tolerate supporters throwing objects on the field of play at players.
It came after Man City’s Rico Lewis was hit in the head by a lighter during their 3-0 win against Burnley in the opening round of the new Premier League season.
The perpetrator has reportedly been removed by the police and will receive a ban.
The club said in response to that incident: ‘Burnley Football Club strongly condemns the unacceptable behavior of throwing objects and invading the pitch by some of our supporters during Friday night’s Premier League game against Manchester City.
The incidents happened during the match and both supporters were identified and taken off the pitch. Both now face serious banning orders. Such behavior will not be tolerated at this club.
“Investigations into these disappointing incidents are ongoing and any further supporters we identify will also be subject to lengthy bans.
“The Club will not allow the actions of any person to spoil, tarnish or jeopardize the enjoyment of all our supporters, the majority of whom have enjoyed the return of Premier League football to Turf Moor.
“Any supporter who violates the club’s safety regulations will be identified and face a severe, potentially lifelong suspension from the club.”
