If Aro Muric thought gifting Everton a win would be the low point of his season, he was wrong. Oh, how wrong he was.

A week ago, Kosovo goalkeeper lost Burnley a crucial match at Goodison Park when an attempted turnover went past him to Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

But that was nothing compared to what happened to him against Brighton. No one who saw the goal here will ever forget it. Without exaggerating: it will still be shown fifty years from now.

There was no danger when Sander Berge rolled a ball back to Muric in the eleventh minute. But the keeper let it trickle into the net under his boot.

Just five minutes earlier, Burnley had been given hope in their Premier League survival bid – thanks to another mistake.

However, Muric’s mistake burst Burnley’s balloon. They really had to win this one. And they didn’t.

Referee: Simon Hooper (Wiltshire)

Burnley may have already passed the point of no return before Brighton’s visit, as they still have to play Manchester United, Newcastle and Tottenham in the run-in.

They could claim they were unlucky not to be awarded a seventh-minute penalty, when French teenager Wilson Odobert tumbled inside the penalty area, with contact made by defender Pervis Estupinan, but referee Simon Hooper was not convinced enough and a VAR check supported him.

But even without a break, Vincent Kompany’s side had two golden opportunities to take the lead during half-time, but failed to take advantage of either.

Even Jacob Bruun Larsen may not have known how he managed to send Odobert’s cross wide on the half-volley from three yards out as he arrived unnoticed at the far post.

And Chelsea loanee David Datro Fofana somehow failed to make good contact with Odobert’s brilliant low ball near half-time.

But Brighton also had chances, with Muric saving twice from Simon Adingra, making a flying stop from Jakub Moder’s free-kick and a brave block to keep out Danny Welbeck making up for that slip.

Burnley centre-back Maxime Esteve denied Adingra with a brilliant tackle just after half-time as the Ivorian burst through on goal.

And although Fofana planted a diving header just wide of Lorenz Assignon’s right-wing cross for the hosts, it was Brighton who then mounted strong pressure.

Gross had one shot go just wide as Muric was stranded, and then saw another shot over by the keeper after Sander Berge cleared the ball just outside the penalty area – with Joao Pedro looking just wide from the resulting corner.

Just when it looked like a goal would never happen, Brownhill found one. But just when it looked like that would be enough, Muric experienced every goalkeeper’s worst nightmare.
