A mysterious object floating in the water has caused a great deal of alarm at a popular beach during the school holidays.

Emergency services responded to Collaroy Beach on Sydney’s northern beaches around 8am on Wednesday following reports from shocked locals about a possible body floating in the water.

A massive search was launched.

There were unconfirmed reports that an overturned kayak was found nearby, southeast of the Collaroy Rockpool Swimming Baths.

Police and ambulance crews searched the area 400m east of the end of Brissenden Avenue with a emergency helicopter deployed to the scene, the Manly Daily reported.

Police told Daily Mail Australia that the ‘body’ floating in the water turned out to be a buoy.

The two-hour search has since been called off.
