Royal Palace officials are reportedly hoping to quietly remove ‘Consort’ from the title of Queen Consort Camilla ahead of King Charles’ coronation in May 2023.
The decision will ultimately depend on how warmly the public accepts Camilla as she steps into her new role in the coming months.
Queen Elizabeth II publicly announced during her platinum anniversary in February that Camilla would receive the title of queen consort when Charles ascended the throne.
And speaking after his mother’s death last month, the new monarch referred to his wife as such: ‘I count on the loving assistance of my dear wife, Camilla. In recognition of her own faithful public service since our marriage seventeen years ago, she will be my Queen Consort.”
But a new report from The Telegraph suggests assistants would be happy to remove “Consort” from the title if the public feels like it.
The late Queen assured Camilla (pictured) would become queen consort when Charles became king in a landmark declaration of the Platinum Jubilee, ending years of uncertainty over the matter

A source told the publication there is hope for a natural transition in which the public and the press will adopt the simpler, abbreviated “Queen Camilla” title.
Consorts of Monarchs past have received the same treatment including the Queen Mother, Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra.
There was a time when honoring Camilla with the royal title would have been controversial for some.
Camilla is said to have voluntarily assumed the title of Consort as a mark of respect, following public opinion surrounding her marriage to the royal family in 2005.
But she has managed to gain a lot of fans in the 17 years since, and received positive response from the public for her treatment of the Queen’s death last month.

Camilla said she felt “deeply honored and deeply moved” by the public seal of approval after Queen Elizabeth publicly vouched for her during her platinum anniversary in February.
Gradually developing within the royal family over the years, she has attended the state opening of parliament, and she now also holds the title of councilor of state and can represent the king in official matters when he is unavailable.
Through charity work that champions literacy and raises awareness of the issue of domestic and sexual violence, Camilla has managed to fulfill her own royal role.
Camilla will be crowned at Charles’ side at his coronation on May 6, just as the last Queen Consort, the Queen Mother, was.
