BT chief planning to axe 55,000 jobs takes home £3.1m in pay

BT chief set to cut 55,000 jobs will receive £3.1m in wages including £1.8m bonus

The boss of BT – which plans to cut up to 55,000 jobs by the end of the decade – took home £3.1million last year.

Chief executive Philip Jansen received a £1.8 million bonus on top of his £1.3 million salary. But his £3.1 million was lower than last year’s £3.35 million.

The group, which also owns mobile networks EE and Plusnet and full-fiber broadband network Openreach, unveiled drastic plans last month to rely on reduced staff and a lower cost base.

BT has invested billions in its entire fiber broadband in the UK. But once this is done, it won’t need as many engineers.

This means about 15,000 jobs will be cut and more than 10,000 will disappear as it looks like networks like 3G and 4G will stop running.

Another 10,000 will be replaced by artificial intelligence and automated services.

Trade union Prospect, which represents the directors, is very concerned about the announced cuts and demands an urgent consultation with Jansen about the plans.

The Communication Workers Union also demanded to be ‘in the room’ when the organizational changes are discussed.
