Bryson DeChambeau dedicates US Open victory to his late dad on Father’s day after extraordinary finish at Pinehurst

Bryson DeChambeau dedicated his US Open victory to his late father after a wild finish at the tournament in Pinehurst.

DeChambeau’s father, Jon, was diagnosed with diabetes in the 1990s and was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2014. After a long battle with the condition, Jon unfortunately passed away in November 2022.

After earning his second US Open victory on Father’s Day, DeChambeau dedicated the victory to his father.

“First of all, I want to say Happy Father’s Day to every father out there,” DeChambeau said. ‘Unfortunately my father passed away [away] a few years ago, and this one is for him.”

Following the death of his father nearly two years ago, the PGA Tour star posted a group of photos and expressed his gratitude for the life Jon lived.

‘I love you, daddy,’ he wrote in a tweet. ‘I’m sad to see you go, but you’ve been through far too much pain in this life. I’m so glad you’re at peace.’

‘Now you can be with me and watch me at every event I play. Thank you for being a great dad and I’ll see you in the next life.’

After his victory on Sunday, DeChambeau looked up several times and pointed to the sky. One of the men from his team also hugged him as he exclaimed, “That’s for your daddy, baby. That’s for your father.’

The dramatic ending came at the expense of Rory McIlroy, who choked in his attempt to get back into the winner’s circle.

DeChambeau brilliantly saved par from a fairway bunker on the 72nd hole, but a devastated McIlroy is left wondering how he let his best chance to end a decade-long wait for a fifth major title slip through his fingers slip.

“I feel like I hit the driver pretty well today,” the winner claimed. ‘It just didn’t start the way I wanted it to. Finally on the 13th I knew I had to birdie there to have a chance as Rory went on the heater.’

“He made a few mistakes on the way in and I just stayed the course. [I] Focused on getting as many fairways as possible, even when that wasn’t the case. I wasn’t very good at that today.’

‘I got out of trouble quite well. And man, I can’t believe that was top to bottom, that was probably the best shot of my life.”
