Brydon Carse grateful for England’s backing as 29-year-old makes successful international return after three-month ban for placing over 300 bets in two-year span

  • Carse was banned for three months after placing more than 300 bets in two years
  • The 29-year-old has since been recalled by England to all three formats
  • Carse recorded his second best ODI figures for England against Australia

Brydon Carse has thanked England for sticking with him after his three-month betting ban.

Carse, 29, was selected for all three international matches straight away after serving a ban for breaching gambling protocols. He posted his second-best 50-over for England on Saturday, also contributing runs from No. 8 in an otherwise disappointing defeat that put Australia 2-0 up.

The Durham all-rounder, who has a two-year contract, is said to have placed more than 300 bets between 2017 and 2019.

But the national selectors remained confident in his cricketing abilities, naming the uncapped Test player in the squad for next month’s tour of Pakistan and, after taking three for 75 and scoring 26 at Headingley, he said: ‘They’ve been incredibly helpful. I’m just looking forward to playing as much cricket as possible in an England shirt.

‘Rob Key has communicated with me very well and everyone in the support structure has given me everything I needed to get back playing.’

Carse’s blistering pace and exaggerated bounce saw him in line for a Test debut at Leeds two years ago at the start of the Bazball era, but injury struck. This weekend Australia made the most of the new ball coming to the bat, taking him for 63 in his first six overs before two wickets in two balls contributed to a collapse from 145 for three to 221 for nine.

Carse was keen to improve his fitness and was able to bowl with both red and white balls during training in Durham today.

He said: ‘I make sure I play enough overs during training to maintain my capacity but given the schedule I am fully focused on white-ball and the adjustments will be made in Pakistan.’
