Brutal husband who set off fireworks in wife’s genitals, causing near-fatal blood loss when she refused to return to him, gets 18 years in prison

A brutal husband who tied his estranged wife to a bed and set off fireworks in her vagina because she refused to return to him has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

The Ukrainian citizen, named in the Czech court only as 36-year-old Oleksandr S., had tried to win back his ex and persuade her to visit him in Pilsen.

But, the Prague High Court ruled, when she refused to move in with him, he carried out a terrifying attack that nearly left her with fatal blood loss.

Prosecutor Matin Rykl told the judges that the pair had sex during their last meeting and when his wife again refused to return, Oleksandr S. took his gruesome revenge.

Rykl said: ‘The suspect tied up his wife with duct tape so she couldn’t defend herself.

He was also ordered to pay £20,000 compensation to his ex and will be deported when he is released from prison.

‘He then stuck a firecracker into her genitals and set it off, even though he probably knew the firecracker could be fatal.’

The court heard how his wife suffered horrific injuries and massive blood loss and only survived thanks to the skills of surgeons at the University Hospital in Pilsen.

In her harrowing testimony, his wife, who wished to remain anonymous, told the court: ‘I was thrown onto the bed and was lying on my stomach.

‘He pushed my underwear aside, put the fireworks in them and lit them.

“There was an explosion, my blood was flowing. He let go of my mouth and untied me.”

She went on to say how she begged him to call 911, but he merely threw her a cloth to wipe up her blood.

Later, the court heard, he admitted and drove her, who was still bleeding profusely, to the hospital.

Judges rejected Oleksandra S.’s claim that the explosion was an accident.

He said: ‘I was at a birthday party when my wife called and said she was visiting.

“I went home, cooked a romantic dinner, she took a shower.”

He explained that “after the meal I persuaded her to have sex, even though she didn’t really want to.”

‘She lay down on the bed, I tied her up and put a gag on her, but she didn’t resist.’

He added: ‘There was a firecracker in the bag next to the bed. I took it out and put it in.

‘I thought it was funny at the time. But she wanted me to pull it out, she screamed, because the gag had come off.

‘It was dark, I wanted to shine a lighter on the fire and then the fireworks went off.

“I was shocked and didn’t know what to do. I was standing there. When I went to grab the fireworks, they exploded.”

Oleksandr S. had appealed against an earlier ruling by the Pilsen Regional Court.

But at a hearing on September 10, judges at the Prague Supreme Court upheld the 18-year prison sentence.

Oleksandr S. must also pay £20,000 in damages to his ex and will be deported from the country as soon as he is released from prison.
