Former Wolves manager Bruno Lage has issued a statement on social media following his resignation from the club earlier this week.

The 46-year-old was relieved of his duties after a poor start to the season saw the club slide down the Premier League relegation by six points after having won just one game in their first eight games.

Wolves were beaten by West Ham last weekend as goals from Gianluca Scamacca and Jarrod Bowen saw the West Midlands side lose half of their Premier League games this season.

Lage has now posted a message thanking the club and supporters and revealing that he was “honoured” to be Molineaux’s manager.

He continued writing Instagram“I am extremely honored to have served Wolverhampton FC. I am deeply indebted to Chairman Guo and Jeff for this opportunity. I am also indebted to everyone who works at the club for making me feel at home.

‘To the players, for their professionalism and commitment to us. To the supporters, who have supported me from the beginning.

“We leave behind a successful first season, with many notable games and a record 9 away wins for Wolves in the Premier League. Now your full support is more important than ever.”

The former Benfica manager defended himself to some extent, insisting that the team would not lose if a striker started the game.

Wolves have struggled on offense this season as summer signing Sasa Kalajdzic suffered an ACL injury in the first half of his debut and Raul Jimenez also struggled to stay fit. Former Chelsea forward Deigo Costa was given a transfer-free contract two weeks ago, but is still building his match fitness.

Lage is convinced that the team’s fate will improve once the trio’s concerns about injuries ease and they can play more minutes on the pitch.

He added: “The team, which has never lost a match with a striker in the first line-up, will certainly improve as attackers become available. Diego will be more and more ready, Raul will help when he gets back and Sasa will be very important in the future.

“I am confident that the team will be at the mid-table in the next seven games until the break in November and aim for the top seven from January. I will always keep my fingers crossed for you. Thank you.’

Wolves are now on the hunt for their next manager and have been tipped to be interested in the appointment of former Spain and Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui after he was sacked by the LaLiga side following their beating by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League this week.
