‘He is very important to the team’: Bruno Fernandes praised by manager Erik ten Hag for his leadership skills after stepping up with Harry Maguire used sparingly this season
- Bruno Fernandes has captained Manchester United for most of the campaign
- The attacking midfielder’s leadership qualities were praised by his coach
- The comments come ahead of a crucial period for the club in all competitions.
Erik ten Hag has praised Bruno Fernandes’ leadership as Manchester United begin a crucial 10 days in four different competitions.
Fernandes has been a regular recipient of the United boss’s armband and club skipper Harry Maguire has worn it sparingly this season and has responded well, particularly since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.
“First as captain, he sets an example on the pitch with the energy he brings,” Ten Hag said of Fernandes ahead of today’s visit to Leicester City.
“He is very important to the team in our tactical approach and transition. He is a great example.
“He can match and deal with load standards that are really high and can take a lot of games.” He’s a great example for everyone on the team.’

Fernandes has replaced Harry Maguire for much of the season as the England international fell to the bench.
After Sunday’s league clash, United face Barcelona on Thursday in the Europa League play-off second leg with the score tied 2-2 and then travel to Wembley for the Carabao Cup final of the Sunday with Newcastle. West Ham is the opponent next week in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Ten Hag has to handle the demands of his players. “I’ll think about rotating from a tactical approach, but sometimes also from a charging approach,” he admitted. “We’ll take a look, but again, the next game is the most important, so we’ll play what we see as the best team.”
We don’t look that far. We just want to be better versions of ourselves and then see where the end of April takes us.
Ten Hag (L) said his team is not looking too far ahead of an important period in all competitions.
