Simmons, 26, was ejected in the third quarter of his team’s 117-112 loss to the Phoenix Suns after a mediocre game.
“Ben Simmons, it’s a sad situation,” Smith said on ESPN’s NBA Countdown. “And I don’t mean that literally, because he’s obviously not doing it, but one would say he’s stealing money.”
“Ben Simmons was ejected on purpose last night,” Smith said. He didn’t want to play.
Fellow analyst Jalen Rose agreed with Smith’s assessment of the 26-year-old.
‘Ben Simmons is stealing money. Ski mask and gloves, actually,” Rose added.
Simmons has struggled to find a steady rhythm this season and has been plagued by various injuries that have sidelined him for numerous games.
The Australian was traded to Brooklyn last February after requesting a trade from the 76ers, after citing mental health concerns as the reason he wanted to leave Philadelphia.

Brooklyn Nets coach Jacque Vaughn said exactly what he wanted from Simmons after he was ejected against the Suns.
“We need him to be productive, and that’s without fouling,” he said.
‘That is helping us to recover basketball. That’s playing with poise and composure. That’s picking us up. Unfortunately, when you’re a good basketball player, your list is long and so are the responsibilities.
“And hopefully, we’ll continue to ask him about those things and challenge him and challenge this group so he can answer those long lists.”
