Brooke also talked about how her ex supported her through her divorce from her late mother, who had been her manager.
‘It was a transition that I needed. “I wasn’t strong enough to divorce my mother Teri on my own,” she admitted to the publication. “I kept falling into it.”
In an earlier interview with People she revealed that her therapist still tells her, “I will always be grateful to Andre for lovingly helping you divorce your mother.”
At the time, she also said of her long-term relationship with the athlete, “We understood each other’s journey towards being famous – or infamous – at such a young age.”
Shields dated screenwriter and producer Henchy and married him in 2001.
The two share daughters Rowan Francis, 20, and Grier Hammond, 17.
When talking about her current husband, she told AARP, “He makes me laugh. I think I always knew I needed solid and normal.
“And he’s a very, very good father. He goes to every basketball game, every volleyball game. And the kids love being around him too.”
“With Andre, it also felt good to feel smaller than someone else, because he was so famous and number one in the world,” Brooke recalls (photo 1999).
