A dog that mauled two people had a tragic past that could have led to the attack, according to the RSPCA.

The Shar-Pei Pitbull named Colicchi turned on his family in Brompton, north Adelaide, last Tuesday.

The attack is said to have been caused by an argument between the owners, a 39-year-old sister and a 42-year-old brother.

The siblings required serious medical attention after the attack, with the man thinking he was going to lose his hand and the woman needing numerous surgeries.

The woman’s six-year-old child was also forced to hide in the bathroom while the pair fought the dog, with the siblings pouring boiling water on the dog in their attempts to avoid it.

Colicchie, a Shar-Pei Pitbull, was reportedly with the family for eight years before it turned on its owners

A family member reported seeing bite marks on the doors (left), while blood was also smeared on the walls and door (right)

The dog has now been euthanized.

It has now been revealed that the dog himself was the victim of a vicious attack when he and his female owner were attacked by a knife-wielding man.

Colicchi was stung at least 15 times, requiring vets to perform surgery to save his life, the RSPCA’s Carolyn Jones said.

“Some of these stab wounds had organs protruding from them. His injuries were among the worst our inspectors have ever seen,” Ms Jones told 9News.

“I don’t think it would be a surprise to imagine that his future behavior could be affected by a dog being the victim of such a traumatic attack.”

It is believed that screaming in the house was what prompted the dog to attack, a sign that it may have been suffering from trauma.

The 39-year-old woman who was attacked by the dog was believed to have been lying on the ground when it started.

“She got dragged by the dog, it was horrible,” a family member told 9 News last week.

“Her eyes rolled into the back of her head and I just screamed.”

The dog’s owners, the 39-year-old sister and the 42-year-old brother, had to take refuge in a bedroom

The dog was stabbed 15 times when his owner was attacked and was recovering at home when he turned on his owners

Eventually, the woman was reportedly able to escape and locked the dog in a bedroom.

“My daughter had to hold on to the door so he couldn’t come out,” the relative said.

“But he was tearing his teeth trying to open the door.

“He’s that strong, he’s lucky he didn’t get the door open.”
